General Summary of Duties: Assists physicians and nurses in various medical, technical, and clerical procedures.
Examples of Duties:
- Assists in surgical procedures. Observes surgery techniques.
- Assists physicians in treating patients. Cleans wounds, applies and changes dressings and bandages.
- Takes vital signs. Performs variety of tests.
- Sets up surgery rooms. Strips and cleans room after procedures.
- Clean, decontaminates, wraps and sterilizes equipment and instruments.
- Maintains supplies and restocks department.
- Receives patients from waiting room, directing them to appropriate areas.
- Answers telephone, provide information, and schedule appointments. Assist receptionist.
- Ensures that lab reports, X-rays, etc. are in patient records.
- Maintain and inspects surgery centers equipment materials in a state of readiness.
- Maintains required records, reports, and statistics.
- Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
Performance Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge of the principles and practice techniques of medical and surgical care to assist in providing patient care and treatment. Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, treatment, and surgical procedures. Knowledge of surgical equipment and instruments to clean, decontaminate, wrap, and sterilize. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Skill in assisting physicians and nurses with surgical procedures both in Hospital setting and office setting. Skill in taking vital signs. Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly.
Completion of course for surgical technicians from an accredited school or certified as a Surgical First Assistant. Must be able to obtain Hospital privileges.
Experience: Minimum of one year surgical assisting experience required.
